GOOD ORAL HYGIENE IMPACTS YOUR OVERALL HEALTH! ….IT CAN ALSO BE EXPENSIVE! Hi! My name is Tiffany! I am a full time, second semester junior completing my Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene (BSDH) at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine. The mission of UNM’s Department of Dental Medicine is to provide education and clinical programs to train dental professionals in dental education, clinical services, community health, and research to improve dental health in New Mexico. UNM’s Dental Hygiene Program requires that I recruit my own patients in order to complete the “hands on” educational portion of this curriculum. The last time I went to my dental hygienist for a basic cleaning it was $250.00, plus $75.00 for a fluoride treatment, and $50.00 for an oral cancer screening. I had to pay this amount out of pocket because as a student, I currently do not have dental insurance. Unfortunately many people do not have dental insurance, or their dental insurance has substantial co-pays. UNM’s Dental Hygiene Program is held in an educational setting, therefore the costs of all services are greatly discounted! For example, a basic adult cleaning is $40.00, a child cleaning is $30.00, a fluoride treatment is $10.00, night guards and athletic guards are $50.00, a full mouth series of x-rays is $40.00, and sealants are $15.00 per tooth. As students, we are required to do extremely thorough appointments, and they can be quite lengthy. Generally, we schedule at least two, two and a half hour appointments, as our speed is much slower and we are much more thorough than a typical practicing dental hygienist. Three or four appointments could be required if our patient has not had their teeth cleaned professionally in a very long time and needs a deep cleaning. During a basic cleaning we include a complete health and dental background, baseline vitals, an oral cancer screening, complete examination of both hard and soft tissues, charting of all teeth, and of course, the complete cleaning, polishing and flossing of the teeth. We also provide many other preventative services in addition to basic dental cleanings. All of our procedures and work is overseen, inspected and checked thoroughly by our instructors who have Masters of Science in Dental Hygiene. I have appointments available for summer! My appointments begin May 27th - June 6th, Monday - Friday! I have morning and afternoon appointments available!
