When a cure is no longer the goal, improving the quality of life in the final stages becomes a shared aspiration of both doctors and patients. Against this backdrop, acupuncture is demonstrating its unique and indispensable value in end-of-life care. The World Health Organization (WHO) has clearly recognized the efficacy of acupuncture for chronic pain such as cancer pain and neuralgia. A systematic review published in 《Frontiers in Medicine》 in 2025 included 31 studies with 2,299 participants who received acupuncture as adjunctive therapy, showing significant improvement in the modern respiratory dyspnea scale (mMRC) score. The GOLD guidelines also endorse acupuncture: the 2023 GOLD guidelines recommended acupuncture and acupressure as optional adjunctive therapies for dyspnea. A 2016 study in 《Annals of Palliative Medicine》 indicated that its effect on improving nausea and vomiting was similar to that of the first-line antiemetic ondansetron. Furthermore, multiple studies published in 《Frontiers in Psychiatry》from 2020 to 2022 have shown that acupuncture can effectively alleviate patients' anxiety and depression. The above evidence collectively demonstrates that acupuncture can not only alleviate various physical pains before death, but also help patients maintain dignity and peace, adding warmth to the final chapter of their lives.
