Study Title: Relationships between improvements in ankle range of motion, strength, and standing dynamic stability control in activities of daily living in persons with ankle range of motion limitations. Overview: The purpose of this study is to determine if participants with both limitations in ankle range of motion and reduced ability to complete their activities of daily living (due to ankle ROM limitations or balance) who participate in a home-based exercise program designed to improve their ankle ROM will show improvements in their balance and ankle movement and will perform activities of daily living better. What is Involved: The study has two components: laboratory measurements and home-based exercises. There will be four visits to the Motion Analysis Research Center (MARC) located in Oakland, CA at Samuel Merritt University, over a 10-week period. Each visit will take up to 3 hours including rest breaks. We will test your standing balance, and both ankle strength and range of motion. We will also observe how you reach for an object at the end range of your reach and open a foot-controlled trash can. All activities where your balance is challenged will involve you wearing either a weight-supporting harness or gait belt to prevent the possibility of a fall. During your visits, you will also complete two surveys to record your assessment of your independence in activities of daily living. Incentive to Participate: Once you are enrolled in the study, after each visit to the MARC, we will give you a $20 gift card. Also, we will pay for your parking in the Summit Garage (across the street from the MARC). Eligibility: This study will recruit a total of 30 persons aged 18+ with a range of motion limitation in one or both ankles and some limitation in their activities of daily living (such as dressing, cooking, reaching for objects, shopping, etc. that require more time, adjustments to completing the task or assistance). A participant will be excluded if they (a) are unable to understand or follow instructions in English, (b) have any cognitive issues that would affect their ability to follow instructions or participate, or (c) have any significant neurological or musculoskeletal conditions that would prevent them from performing the tasks required in the study: balancing while standing, moderate exertion during the muscle strength testing, reaching overhead, or walking a short distance (with or without an ambulation device).
